Common questions about the Littmann CORE Digital Stethoscope
About the Littmann CORE
Q1
What is the Littmann CORE Digital Stethoscope?
The Littmann® CORE Digital Stethoscope is the most advanced stethoscope Littmann has ever created. It pairs the acoustic performance of a Littmann Cardiology IV with a built-in digital module developed with Eko Health, giving you cardiology-grade acoustic listening and powerful digital tools in a single device.
Key capabilities include up to 40× sound amplification, active noise cancellation, Bluetooth connectivity to the free Eko App, real-time waveform visualization, and secure sound recording.
Q2
Is the Littmann CORE worth it for medical students?
Yes, the CORE is one of the best stethoscopes a medical student can invest in, designed to serve you throughout your entire career, not just through school.
Many attending physicians and program directors use the CORE too, making it a credible, professional tool at every career stage.
Q3
When did the Littmann CORE come out? Has it replaced older Littmann electronic models?
The Littmann CORE was released in 2020 through a partnership between Littmann and Eko Health. It replaced and discontinued the previous Littmann electronic stethoscope lineup, including the Model 3000, 3100, 3200, 4000, and 4100.
Compared to those earlier models, the CORE delivers significantly improved digital sound processing, Bluetooth smartphone integration, real-time waveforms, and the build quality of a Cardiology IV chestpiece.
Q4
How does the CORE differ from the Littmann Cardiology IV?
The CORE uses the same chestpiece and acoustic design as the Cardiology IV — acoustic performance is identical in analog mode. The difference is the CORE's additional digital layer:
One button switches instantly between analog (cardiology-grade) and digital modes.
Q5
Is the Littmann CORE FDA-cleared?
Yes. The Eko digital module used in the Littmann CORE is FDA-cleared. Eko Health has received nine FDA clearances across its digital stethoscope hardware and AI software.
The CORE has been featured in 70+ peer-reviewed clinical publications, including research with the Mayo Clinic.
Sound Quality & Performance
Q6
How much does the CORE amplify sound?
Up to 40× at peak frequency compared to analog mode. Combined with active noise cancellation, this lets you clearly hear faint or subtle findings that a standard stethoscope might miss.
Common settings where amplification makes a real difference: ICU, ER, NICU, outpatient clinics, and any assessment through isolation PPE.
Q7
Does digital mode change or distort how sounds feel?
At typical amplification settings, no. Digital processing preserves the natural character of auscultated sounds. Most clinicians and students adapt quickly within a few clinical encounters.
Tip: start at a lower amplification level and increase incrementally. Very high amplification without practice can make interpretation harder.
Q8
What are the practical limitations of the CORE?
Battery, Charging & Connectivity
Q9
How long does the battery last on one charge?
Up to 8 hours of continuous digital use. For most clinicians, one overnight charge comfortably covers a full clinical shift or day of rotations.
Q10
Can I use the CORE while charging?
No, for safety reasons, the CORE must be unplugged during use. Charging is quick, and most users find charging overnight or between clinical sessions is sufficient.
Q11
Does the CORE need Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to work?
No. Amplification, active noise cancellation, and both acoustic diaphragms work completely offline — no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi required.
Bluetooth is only used to connect with the Eko App for recording and waveform display. Wi-Fi is only needed to sync or export recordings.
Eko App & Digital Features
Q12
Do I need the Eko App to use the CORE?
No. The Eko App is optional — the CORE works as a fully capable digital stethoscope without it. The app adds:
The app is free to download and compatible with both iPhone and Android.
Q13
Can CORE recordings be used for education or telemedicine?
Yes, this is one of the most valuable features for students, residents, and clinicians. Recordings can support reviewing findings with attending physicians or preceptors, case-based learning and self-assessment, telehealth and remote specialist consultations, and documenting changes in a patient's cardiac or pulmonary sounds over time.
Always follow institutional privacy policies when sharing patient recordings.
Q14
Is the Eko App compatible with both iPhone and Android?
Yes. The Eko App works on both iOS and Android. You can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth or route audio through wired headphones connected to your phone for a more reliable low-latency listening experience.
Who Is the CORE For?
Q15
Is the CORE too advanced for medical students?
Not at all. Many medical students and residents find the CORE accelerates learning compared to a standard stethoscope. Amplification builds ear-training confidence, waveforms provide visual reinforcement of what you're hearing, and recording lets you review findings after rotations.
The CORE is built to last through medical school and an entire clinical career, making it a worthwhile investment at any stage of training.
Q16
Can nurses use the Littmann CORE Digital Stethoscope?
Absolutely. Nurses are one of the largest user groups for the CORE. It is particularly valuable in ICU, ER, telemetry, med-surg, pediatric, NICU, labor and delivery, long-term care, and home health settings — any environment where noise, PPE, or busy conditions affect auscultation quality.
Q17
Will the CORE help clinicians with hearing loss?
For mild-to-moderate hearing loss, yes — the CORE is one of the most recommended tools for clinicians managing hearing challenges. The 40× amplification, ANC, visual waveforms, and headphone audio routing can significantly improve auscultation confidence.
Note: Every individual's hearing loss is unique. Always validate your ability to accurately identify diagnostic sounds before depending on any stethoscope clinically. Patient safety must come first.
Q18
Is the CORE appropriate for specialties beyond cardiology?
Yes. While the CORE excels at cardiac auscultation, it is equally powerful across specialties:
Cleaning, Care & Warranty
Q19
How do I clean and disinfect the Littmann CORE?
Clean the CORE between every patient contact using 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes (recommended), hospital-approved disinfectant wipes, or mild soap and water on tubing and chestpiece only.
Never autoclave, never immerse in liquid, avoid acetone or harsh solvents, and keep moisture away from the charging port. Autoclaving will permanently damage the device.
Q20
What warranty does the Littmann CORE come with?
The Littmann CORE includes a 2-year limited warranty from Littmann. Purchasing from SurgoMed, an authorized US dealer, ensures your warranty is fully valid and your stethoscope is authentic.
Counterfeit Littmann stethoscopes are a real and growing problem. Only buy from authorized dealers to protect yourself and your patients.
Q21
Can I use HSA or FSA funds to buy the CORE?
Yes, digital stethoscopes like the Littmann CORE may be eligible for HSA/FSA purchase and reimbursement as qualified medical equipment. Some purchasers also use CME (continuing medical education) funds.
Save your order confirmation as a receipt and check with your plan administrator for eligibility.
